How this site is made
Who publishes SyllabusCalc, how its calculators and guides are made, and how the math in them is checked.
Who publishes it
SyllabusCalc is published under its own name by an independent publisher and maintained by one person. It is not affiliated with any school, registrar or testing body, and no page is paid for by anyone it mentions.
Editor
C. B. Zakarian (a pen name) is the owner and editor of SyllabusCalc. C. B. Zakarian holds a Ph.D. in Information Systems, with a focus on data science, from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (2016), and is an assistant professor.
C. B. Zakarian decides what SyllabusCalc publishes and when, and the figures on each page are checked against the sources it names before publication. Pages the editor has reviewed in full show the date of that review, and errors are corrected when they are found.
How the tools and guides are made
The calculators, the guides and the test suites behind them are produced under the owner’s direction. The owner decides what is published and when.
Until September 25, 2026 the About page said that one person writes every tool, every guide and every test. That line was inaccurate and was corrected that day. Apart from the editor’s credentials above, no page describes anyone’s own schooling or teaching.
How the numbers are checked
- A mirror for every calculator. Before a tool ships, its logic is reimplemented in a separate Python program that never imports the site’s JavaScript, and that mirror asserts the tool’s output on ordinary inputs, boundary scores, impossible targets and malformed input.
- Published figures are assertions. Every worked example printed in a guide is an assertion in a mirror. The test page lists the suites and their counts, and the pre-deploy gate refuses to package the site if any assertion fails.
- Outside facts are linked. A page that states what an institution or a regulation says links that institution’s own page or the regulation’s text. Each link is re-checked wherever the linked site’s robots.txt and bot defenses allow it; where they rule out a re-check, the link stays, flagged in the gate’s log with the date it was last confirmed. The gate refuses a release that cites a URL that has never been confirmed, or one whose latest check failed.
A confirmed error becomes a failing assertion first and is then fixed, so the same mistake cannot come back, and the page’s modified date moves with the correction.
