The letter-to-points table (editable)

The default is the standard 4.0 plus-minus ladder. Change any value and the GPA above recomputes. Your school's published table wins.

LetterGrade points
The default ladder (A = 4.0, A− = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, down to D− = 0.7) matches the published scales of the University of Missouri and Indiana University, with A+ counted at 4.0. Plenty of schools differ — some skip plus-minus, some award no A+ or D− — so edit the table to match your registrar. Your syllabus and catalog always win.

How the math works

Every course turns into quality points: its grade points times its credit hours. GPA is total quality points divided by total credits:

GPA = Σ(points × credits) ÷ Σ(credits)

Take four courses: an A in a 3-credit course (12.0 quality points), a B+ in 4 credits (13.2), a B− in 3 credits (8.1), and a C in 2 credits (4.0). That is 37.3 quality points over 12 credits, and 37.3 ÷ 12 = 3.108…, shown as 3.11. Notice what the credit weighting did: the B+ course, at 4 credits, pulled the average more than the A did — which is exactly why a heavy course is worth extra care.

Questions

What formula does this calculator use?

GPA equals total quality points divided by total credits, where each course contributes its grade points times its credit hours. Four courses - an A in 3 credits, a B+ in 4, a B- in 3, and a C in 2 - give 12.0 + 13.2 + 8.1 + 4.0 = 37.3 quality points over 12 credits, which is 3.11.

Can I change the letter-to-points table?

Yes. Every value in the table is editable and the GPA recomputes on each change. The default is the standard 4.0 plus-minus ladder, with A+ counted at 4.0. If you blank a value or make it invalid, courses with that letter are skipped and counted in the note under the result.

How are credit hours used?

Each course's grade points are multiplied by its credit hours before averaging, so a 4-credit course moves the GPA four times as much as a 1-credit lab with the same grade. The credits field accepts values above 0 up to 30, in halves or finer.

Why does my result differ from my school portal?

This tool is the plain credit-weighted average of the rows you enter. School portals also apply institution rules - repeat and replacement policies, pass or fail exclusions, transfer credit handling, and their own rounding. The registrar's number is the official one.

What does the skipped-rows note mean?

A row only counts when it has all three things: a letter, credits above 0, and a valid points value for that letter in the table. Partially filled rows are ignored and the note under the result says how many were skipped.
